NDC CONDEMNS ATTACK, OBSTRUCTION OF PETER OBI’S VISIT TO YELWATA

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the alleged attack and obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State to sympathise with victims of the recent killings in Yelwata community.

In a statement issued on September 7, 2026, by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party alleged that suspected hired thugs blocked Obi’s convoy and prevented him from gaining access to Yelwata, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.

The NDC alleged that the group was led by an aide to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and claimed that the attackers were armed with dangerous weapons. According to the party, the group reportedly chanted, “Peter Obi, go back,” as they obstructed his movement into the community.

Obi, according to the statement, said he arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. with the intention of visiting victims and families affected by the killings. He said he was not in the state for political activities but to mourn with grieving families, listen to those affected and offer solidarity.

The NDC described the alleged obstruction as deeply troubling, arguing that a visit aimed at consoling bereaved families should not have been prevented. The party stressed that Nigerians, particularly residents of Benue, deserve to live peacefully, travel safely and cultivate their farmlands without fear.

The party further declared that it would not be deterred by the incident, insisting that government’s fundamental responsibility is the protection of human lives. It said the hearts and prayers of Obi and the NDC remained with the victims, their families and the wider Yelwata community despite the denied access.

The NDC called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify and prosecute those responsible, and ensure the safety of citizens and leaders seeking to express solidarity with communities affected by violence.
